While
it's not possible to access someone else's actual credit report
(without their consent), it is possible to discover financial
"track records" by researching public records online...
First
of all - to obtain your own credit report for free as a US
citizen, you can simply go to AnnualCreditReport.com
and register to receive it. This site is a government service
that will allow you to access your own credit score once annually.
You cannot, however, use it to lookup information on somebody
else.
But
in regards to researching someone else's financial background,
here's the process:
|
1.
Search court records. Court
records are public, and contain civil & bankruptcy
case details among their archives. For example, cases
in which credit card companies or collections agencies
have sued an individual are public. For more information,
see our court
records search page.
2.
Search bankruptcy records. Surprisingly enough,
this is actually done over the phone. For full details,
see our bankruptcy
records page.
3.
Verify income claims & asset ownership. If
the issue is regarding the validity of a person's claims
in regards to their income or property, then the best
place to turn in terms of online research is,
again, public records.
Where you need to look depends on what you need to verify.
For
starters, we recommend going through our free
background check wizard, which custom creates
a public records search based on your criteria. You
can start the wizard search at the top of this page.
Some
examples would be if you wanted to verify that someone
was a stated professional - like a doctor or accountant
- you could search for them across an official license
lookup database. (See our business
background checks page).
Or
if you wanted to verify that someone owned, rather than
rented a house, you could do a search for their name
in the appropriate property records database. (Go to
our main public
records directory and select a state
in order to search property records)
You
might be surprised at how much is "out there"
once you start searching...
