Prison Records
Federal
US Prisons and most county jails keep an active inmate roster
record available to the public. In most cases, this relates
only to current inmates - previous jail history may not be
available.
Also,
some private companies (in particular, VINELink - see below)
have developed proprietary databases and notification systems
whereby citizens can stay informed as to the location of an
inmate, as well as details regarding their release date and
parole details. Some people - such as victims of a crime -
use these services as a way to keep track of when the inmate
will be released so they can make necessary plans as appropriate.
Some
databases may include historical prison data - but based on
our research, most regional "prison records"
and so on are largely current data, especially local or county
jails. Meaning that if you're looking to see if someone has
served jail time - this might not be possible with these online
searches.
The
exception would be the Federal inmate locator search (see
link below), which includes prison records for past and present
detainees who were incarcerated at some point from 1982 to
the present date. They do have a location program for searching
for inmate records prior to 1982, but since those records
are non-digital, the search request must be made in writing.
Most
databases enable you to query them by the name or inmate ID
of the prisoner.
