Conducting a Reverse Cell Phone Lookup

Technology has given us the ability to do things, such as a reverse phone lookup, with greater ease these days. There are ways to do this for free or with a service that is fee based. There are some things you will want to know before doing this type of phone number look up.

Why Do a Reverse Cell Phone Lookup?

A reverse cell phone number look up enables you to track down a name behind a phone number. This can be done for cell phones and landlines. By typing in the number into a directory search, you can usually obtain at least a person or company name linked to the phone number.

You may want to use a reverse number lookup to find out who has been calling you when the number is unfamiliar or does not come up automatically on caller ID. For cell phones, this is commonly used if, for example, you have a new number and may not have all your contacts stored in the phone yet. So, if a number appears and you do not recognize it, you may not want to answer it, but you will still want to know who owns the number.

Is it a friend or family member you have given your cell phone number to? Is it someone you are trying to avoid that has somehow gotten your new number? Or is it simply a wrong number? Often, when you receive a new number for a cell phone or a land line, the number previously belonged to someone else. This can be frustrating because you receive calls that are not even intended for you. If you get a call and then use a reverse number lookup, you can try to find out if the call was for you or not.

How to Use a Reverse Cell Phone Look Up

To use a reverse number look up, there are a few different steps to take. First, you will type the number into the directory search feature. Use the entire number including area code. The number will either come back as private or, if your search is successful, you will have the data you are looking for.

For some sites, a reverse phone lookup will bring back a name only. Other methods may bring back more data for you to go on. This could include a business name, if there is one affiliated with the number, links to other sites (such as social media sites the person has the number listed on) and, in some instances, an address.

If you know you have a number that is not a home phone number, you can do a specific reverse cell phone lookup. This is less likely to bring back an address associated with the phone number, but can still be a useful tool. Plus, if you can gain access to the name the cell phone number belongs to you can try to do another type of people search online.

What You Can Find Out When Doing a Reverse Cell Phone Lookup

Generally, if you are doing a phone lookup search, you can get at least a name linked to the number, whether it is a land line or a cell phone. If you do a reverse cell phone lookup specifically, you may get just a name or the name of a business the number belongs to, if anything at all. Home phone numbers may give you more detailed data.

There are several directories online for tracking down people using their name. More than likely, you will get multiple results for just a name. You can determine which person it may be by limiting the search to a state and area within a state by using the area code the phone number included. Type in the area code as a different search to track down the state.

It may take a little more detailed detective work, but you can end up with the name, state and, possibly, the area within the state the cell phone number is connected with. There are plenty of good sites to do a reverse number lookup with. There are also some very useful sites to do a separate search for people by name and to look up area codes to determine the state where the number was registered.

Can I Be Removed from a Phone Lookup Directory?

Many well known directories or search engines did away with a free, direct lookup service because so many people would contact them to try to get their names removed. The thing is, even if you manage to be removed from one directory, there are plenty of others still out there you may be on and not even know it. First, you can look for different directories by doing a reverse phone search.

For each of these reverse phone search indexes, type in your current number and see what the results are. If a directory has more information about you than you would like, you can then try to contact them to see if you can be removed. You may not even want to be removed; you may just want to update the data linked to your number to make it easier for people who may be searching for you. You should consider doing this for your home phone as well as conducting a reverse cell phone lookup to see what information is out there connected to your phone numbers.

Some sites have an easy method to request a removal from a phone number lookup database. There may be a tab marked for requesting a removal. Others may be a bit trickier. You may have to search the site a bit to find a way to email or call the business and request a removal or to ask that the information at least be updated. You can even do this for old cell phone numbers, if you still remember them or have them written down. This could be just to see if your current number actually comes up connected to you or if an old number does. Again, if the data is outdated, you may want to contact the site for a removal or data change request.

Reverse Phone Number Search - Free or Fee?

There are plenty of choices for conducting your reverse phone search or reverse cell phone search. Some will be at no charge and some will require that you pay to use the services. The thing is, free ones are generally less detailed or are not up to date. This isn't always the case, though. Sites that offer a search that costs money often have more detailed information but again, this isn't always true.

The bottom line is that it depends how much you would like to be able to locate the person behind the phone number. If you have lost touch with someone that you are hoping to hear from, this could be a very worthwhile method to use. Or, on the other hand, you are trying to avoid someone or fear you are being stalked, this would also be an important method to consider using.

Also, keep in mind, there are directories that can help with numbers outside of the United States or Canada. You can even track down numbers in places across the globe, such as Europe. Some areas may not allow this type of a search, though, and it can be a good idea to find out if this is an acceptable search to conduct based on the location. Now you can search for others using a home phone directory or reverse cell phone lookup, or even search for yourself to see what information is available out there.

Cell phone numbers, unlisted numbers and some commercial numbers are not listed in typical directories (such as WhitePages). However, this doesn't mean that they're impossible to lookup...

More specifically, unlisted numbers include:

* Cell phone numbers * Private landline numbers (usually business, sometimes residential)
* International numbers in a country where there is no centralized (or public) database * VOIP numbers (like Skype)
* Satellite phone numbers * Vanity numbers or 800 numbers

While the likelihood of finding cross-search details (name, address, etc.) for an unlisted phone number is much less than a registered phone line - it's not impossible.

Especially not in light of how much "careless data" exists on the internet that you can find with ease. This includes things like searching online communities, message boards, auction sites, classified sites, unofficial phone number registries, public records and more.

Reverse Lookup Resources for Cell Phone & Unlisted Numbers

Most-Likely Data Sources*:

Google - Google.com indexes and archives most of the "exposed" web - that is, any page that Google's crawler program can reach via hyperlinks.

This often means that even sensitive pages (like user account profiles) and certainly public pages (such as classified ads with a phone number) will be displayed in its search results.

Try searching for the number with the following variations:

xxx-xxx-xxxx xxx-xxxx
"xxx-xxx-xxxx" xxx "xxx-xxxx"
xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxx

And so on. Searching for the number in quotation marks will return exact matches only, so as to substantially narrow your search.

MySpace - The most popular social network, with over 120 million users.

Search their index for your target number, as phone numbers are occasionally included with people's profile information.

FaceBook - Similar to myspace, but you'll have to register for an account first. Then, search from the "search" box at the top-left of your profile space.

Search for the last 4-digit portion of the phone number only. This will/may pull up a list of people and groups. You can view groups directly, but you can only view someone's profile if they've accepted a friend request.

Craigslist - The world's largest and most-active free classifieds network.

First select the city you'd like to search within, and then search for the number from the top-left search box. It's recommended that you only search the last 4 digits of the ph. number with this search as well.

BoardTracker - This is a meta-forum search that simultaneously searches the threads, posts and conversations of more than 30,000 active forums.

Search for the number without the area code for best results.

USFreeAds - Similar to Craigslist, but not as active.

Search for the number without the area code from the top search form on the homepage.

Some data sources are user-generated and not official "listings".

Less-Likely Data Sources*:

800Notes - A public, user-driven database of #800 numbers and other business/telemarketing numbers - with identification details where provided.

WhoCalledUs - Similar to 800Notes.

National Cellular Directory - A public, user-driven database of wireless numbers. Several thousand records on file, but very small overall coverage on a national scale.

Mobile Phone No. - Similar to National Cell Directory. Different records.

Data sources are user-generated and not official "listings".
