the United States, convicted sex offenders are required to
register with the local authorities in regards to their place
of residence, their employment location and other relevant
details.
In
general, all or most of this information is public, online
- and free to access.
Some
states choose to disclose more (or less) information than
others, so the amount of personal information available about
a given sex offender will differ depending on their location.
Most
state databases will allow you to run searches on individuals
by name, address and general area (to see if any registered
offenders live in your area, or near your children's school).
Furthermore, most databases also include pictures or mugshots
of the offenders, which are required to be updated and kept
current by law.
Offenders
who do not comply with the upkeep of their mandatory registration
are listed as "delinquent", and are usually wanted
by authorities for that reason.
