How to Find Unclaimed Money & Property Online

Did you know that in the United States alone there is over $35 Billion in unclaimed funds and property? And that's billion with a "B"...

With that in mind, it's quite plausible that you or someone you know may be entitled to receive assets or money that the government is simply storing for them in lieu of their claim.

So what's the deal with unclaimed property? And how does the government end up safeguarding them?

In general, it works like this - businesses are required by law to transfer any "unclaimed" accounts, assets or money which belong to someone else after a certain period of time. At this point, the government's role is to try and locate the missing owner and reunite them with their property.

A simple example of this would be a bank holding someone's checking/saving account that has been dormant for a long period of time. The bank would try to make contact with the account holder, but if he or she was deemed missing, then the funds are turned over to the government.

This same process applies to things like inheritances, payroll checks, pension payments, investment or trading accounts, security deposit boxes, insurance policies, refunds (eg. mortgage insurance refunds, etc), stock dividends, and even things like unclaimed tax refunds.

You can freely claim any property that is owed to you, or if property is owed to a deceased family member to which you are the legal heir. Unclaimed records are free to access and the claim process is also free, regardless of what you may have been told by a company or individual who is trying to earn a contingency or "finder's fee" to help you locate missing funds.

Here is a comprehensive list of databases and unclaimed property searches:
